I found a small photograph of my Mum sitting on the little beach on Althorpe Island. There are two of my siblings and a cousin with her. All toddlers. The bairns. In the post war years this image looked to me like a snapshot of a moment. A moment of rightness. After the pain and loss of the war here was something good and joyful. The sun is shining, the sea is glittering, the babies play in the sand and the world can disappear even if just for one day.
